Linear Abacus® presented at the MAWA 2024 Annual Maths Conference on Friday 22nd November.
Our Session- Demystifying word problems: An additive thinking masterclass for primary teachers
Summary of Session:
Interpreting word problems challenges many students' mastery of arithmetic operations. This session explored how our innovative Additive Thinking unit and Word Problem Flashcard set, helps bridge mathematics and language for students aged 6-11. Participants had the opportunity to discover deep connections between mathematical structure and English grammar. They also learned about strategies to help them structure word problems effectively, coordinate concepts with linguistic patterns, and teach symbol interpretation to construct, interpret, and reason with symbols and simple number sentences
Our participants gained practical lesson ideas and saw real work samples from Victorian schools, which demonstrated our Additive Thinking Unit and Flash Cards impact.

2023 WA Annual Mathematics Conference
Last year on November 16th 2023, Genovieve Grouios presented at the WA Annual Mathematics Conference in Perth. She explored the connections between place value and the metric units.
Summary of Session:
The theme for this year's conference was unlocking potential. In the session participants explored new and innovative ways to teach a sequence of lessons on base 10 place value and measurement concepts, that challenge students to make connections in their learning and think creatively and critically about these areas.

Participants experienced how quickly the base 10 scale grows as they modelled numbers greater than 1000.
As they walked the journey along the beads they were able to explain how they reached bead 1546.
“I know one bead string has 100 beads, then ten bead strings would represent 1000 beads. From here I would need to count another 500 beads (which is half of what I just counted i.e., 5 bead strings). Next, I would count 4 tens (concentrating on the alternating colours on the string) and finally six more individual beads. The last bead counted gives the name for the bead”.
