DESCRIPTION

There is a moment in every child’s mathematical journey where things quietly start to fall apart. The calculations still work — but the understanding isn’t there. Numbers become things to manipulate rather than things to read. And the gap between primary arithmetic and secondary mathematics opens up, often without anyone noticing until it’s too late.

This program was built for that moment — and for the parents who see it coming and want to do something about it.

An Induction to Foundational Numeracy is a 36-lesson, 14-section structured teaching program that does something no other mathematics resource currently does: it teaches children the grammar of mathematics — explicitly, systematically, and in a way that makes the hidden structure of our number system finally visible.

In the same way that phonics gives children a reliable system for decoding written language, this program gives children — and their parents — a reliable system for decoding and constructing mathematical thinking. The authors call it numeral mechanics: a colour-coded, language-rich approach to arithmetic that transforms abstract symbols into something children can see, hold, discuss, and genuinely understand.

This is not a workbook. It is not a collection of exercises. It is a complete, carefully sequenced program — written by a credentialed mathematics educator and a research mathematician — that takes a child from the foundations of place value all the way through to early algebraic thinking, in 36 structured daily lessons.

Priced to reach every family who needs it — not just the ones who can afford not to think about it.

What the program covers across 36 days:

Place value — whole numbers below and above 100, numbers beyond 1000 · Compact representations and exponential notation · Renaming numbers · Decimals — tenths and hundredths · Fractions as measures · Informal and formal measurement · Metric units and unit conversion · Different number base systems · Connections to algebra — descriptive arithmetic, linear equations, coordinates on the Cartesian plane

One program. One tool. A coherent mathematical journey from Year 3 through to Year 8.

What’s in the box:

One copy of An Induction to Foundational Numeracy (311 pages, paperback) · Two 100-bead Linear Abacus® strings in fabric pouches

The book is the program. Each lesson includes an introduction, prompting questions to encourage dialogue, clear worked examples, an exploration task, and reflection opportunities. Camera icons throughout the book signal moments where a video is available — for the concepts that are hardest to visualise from text alone. These videos are part of the Linear Abacus subscription, coming soon.

A note on the subscription — it’s ready.

At camera icon moments throughout the book, you will see a prompt for video support. These videos — along with a learning hub, parent guides, assessments, and a growing community of homeschool families — will be available through a Linear Abacus subscription, priced to be just as accessible as this kit.

★★★★★

I recently used the Linear Abacus while teaching a unit on fractions. It was a great tool for helping students visualise and understand parts of a whole. Students represented fractions on the abacus and were able show equivalence. Some through their own investigation! Students were able to develop an understanding of fractions broadly and were able to make connections to decimal place value and measurement, partly due to previous experiences with the tool.
