Our mathematics consultants can provide schools with new mathematical content knowledge, skills and resources required to teach mathematics with meaning. At Linear Abacus we provide a wide range of activities, sequences, and professional learning suites which target areas in mathematics assessment, numeration, arithmetic-including whole numbers and fraction numbers, measurement- including length, area, volume and the metric units, and statistical representations. All materials are supported by current educational research and highlight key teaching strategies that promote active learning and sense making in the mathematics classroom.

For primary and secondary schools (F-9)
In-school coaching which involves:

  • Modelled lessons which demonstrate effective teaching practices and models for instruction. For example, the Linear Abacus™ lessons encourage rich learning and classroom communication.

  • Teacher reflection and individual goal setting. To allow teachers to enhance their skills, knowledge, and capacity to teach mathematics effectively using the Linear Abacus™.

  • Whole staff professional learning meetings to demonstrate ways that the Linear Abacus™ can be used to teach specific content areas in mathematics.

For networks and regions

  • Professional development sessions on the Linear Abacus™ to demonstrate new pedagogies and approaches to teaching numeration, arithmetic, and measurement. This program is suitable for school leaders, numeracy leaders and classroom teachers who are looking for innovative ways to teach mathematics.

For rural schools in Australia (F-9)

  • Online webinar sessions can be conducted and used as professional learning. This will revolve around using the Linear Abacus™ to teach mathematical concepts in number and measurement. Webinars will range from 1-1.5 hours.

Exploring Place Value Using the Linear Abacus.

A 2-hour online webinar led by Genovieve Grouios, which explores ways to use concrete materials in the classroom to effectively teach numeration. This is suitable for primary (1-6) and high school (7-8) educators. Access to slides and resources included with session.

Content Explored

Place value is a fundamental area of numeration and is one of the big ideas required to develop a strong number sense. In this 2-hour online webinar, we will explore the key mathematical ideas connected to numeration (including ways that this can be extended to decimal numeration) and will demonstrate how to implement these tasks into your classroom. Classroom examples will be shared and will provide ideas on how to:

  • use concrete materials such as the Linear Abacus to enhance your maths instruction

  • help students develop a deep understanding of these concepts and make connections in their learning

  • to assess students' understanding of number concepts

This webinar is suitable for teachers, support staff, tutors, and school leaders.

A New Way to Explore Fractions

A1.5-hour online webinar on learning fractions with meaning.  This presentation will explore the big ideas within this concept and will provide teachers with innovative ways to explore the topic with the Linear Abacus. This webinar is suitable for primary and secondary educators (3-8).

Content Explored

Learning about fractions is no easy feat for children. Too often, children are given rules for calculating with fractions with no meaning. This robs children of the opportunity to approach the whole concept of fractions and can even lead to misconceptions and fragile understandings. In this presentation Genovieve Grouios will demonstrate how to use a new resource known as the Linear Abacus™, to help children learn about fraction concepts such as, numeration, comparison, ordering fractions on a number line, and equivalence

This webinar is suitable for teachers, support staff, tutors, and school leaders.
